Dr. Mark Shirey is a board-certified optometrist with advanced expertise in cornea and contact lens care, ocular disease management, and surgical co-management. As the only optometrist in Mobile certified by the American Board of Optometry, he brings a high level of clinical knowledge, precision, and commitment to patient care. His practice philosophy centers on delivering thorough, individualized treatment to support each patient’s long-term vision and eye health.
Dr. Shirey began his academic career at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, earning a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. He went on to complete his Doctorate of Optometry at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, where he distinguished himself both academically and clinically. During his training, he was honored with the Outstanding Clinician Award in both his second and fourth years, received the Bausch & Lomb Surgical Award, and was inducted into the Beta Sigma Kappa academic honor society. In 2008, he was recognized as the Alabama Optometric Association’s Young Optometrist of the Year, reflecting his early leadership and excellence in the field.
Today, Dr. Shirey continues to provide comprehensive, patient-focused eye care, utilizing his certification in both Diagnostic and Therapeutic Pharmaceutical Agents to diagnose and treat a wide range of ocular conditions. He works closely with surgeons to guide patients through pre- and postoperative care, ensuring seamless, informed, and compassionate management throughout their treatment journey.
Outside the office, Dr. Shirey lives in West Mobile with his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Cate. He enjoys spending time outdoors—golfing, hunting, and fishing—and has a passion for aviation. One of his proudest personal milestones includes completing his first solo flight on October 26, 2008.
