How is Dry Eye Treated?

For Incidental and environmental cases of dry eye (mild to moderate) eye lubricant drops both OTC and prescription and ointments can remedy the conditions and alleviate your discomfort. Another possible treatment is the installation of lacrimal plugs, also called punctal plugs, which are inserted into the tear ducts to stop tears from draining off the surface of the eye too quickly. However, when more chronic Dry Eye factors are an issue, such as diseases of the meibomian glands, a more advanced treatment is recommended.

iLux Treatment

Many individuals who suffer from dry eyes, may have Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). MGD occurs when tiny glands in the eyelids, both top, and bottom, become clogged. Once these glands are clogged, they are unable to properly lubricate and protect the eye’s tear layer from evaporation. For your eye to function properly, your meibomian and tear glands need to work together.

iLux® is a new in-office procedure that allows individualized targeted treatment of evaporative dry eye. The iLux treatment applies light-based heat to the eyelid, melting the trapped oils within the glands. After warming each lid in two different spots, focus-guided compressions are performed to express oils out of the glands. This allows the doctor to verify treatment effectiveness by viewing the gland oils as they are expressed. More difficult areas can be retreated until oils are expressed.
