As a board certified ophthalmologist and osteopathic physician, Dr. Kelvin “Paul” McDaniel is uniquely qualified to provide a full spectrum of eye care with a patient-centered approach. Dr. McDaniel has expertise in surgical and medical management of a variety of ocular pathologies including cataracts, glaucoma, dry eye, strabismus, pterygium, refractive surgery and astigmatism correction, cosmetic and functional eyelid surgery, and other advanced surgery.

Originally from Covington, Louisiana, Dr. McDaniel graduated cum laude from Tulane University. He then attended medical school at the founding school of osteopathic medicine, A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri where he graduated with honors. He moved to St. Louis for his medical internship and then completed his residency training in Ophthalmology at Saint Louis University where he quickly gained a reputation for being a highly skilled and proficient surgeon. Dr. McDaniel set the record for performing the most cataract surgery in the history of his residency program, which was established over 100 years ago. He also pioneered the use of MIGS (minimally invasive glaucoma surgery) at his residency program and was instrumental in incorporating their use into daily practice. Additionally, he was the first physician to implant a MIGS device in a live patient at Saint Louis University.

Dr. McDaniel is among a few select cataract surgeons in the area who offer dropless cataract surgery. Traditional cataract surgery requires post-operative patients to adhere to a schedule of different eye drops for several weeks after surgery; while these drops are important for preventing infection and inflammation, many patients find the typical eye drop routine inconvenient or overwhelming. In dropless cataract surgery, Dr. McDaniel uses intracameral agents that are a special type of anti-inflammatory and antibiotic medicine that is placed in the eye during surgery—eliminating or reducing the need for eye drops after cataract surgery.

Additionally, Dr. McDaniel is one of a few cataract surgeons to offer the RxSight® Light Adjustable Lens™. The light adjustable lens (LAL) is an innovative intraocular lens (IOL) that can offer more accurate vision correction for patients having cataract surgery or refractive lens surgery (RLE). The LAL is the first lens that can be adjusted after surgery and it can be a great choice for patients seeking to reduce or eliminate their need for glasses. Learn more about this exciting IOL and schedule an appointment with Dr. McDaniel if you are interested in the light adjustable lens in the Gulfcoast area.

Dr. McDaniel has been involved in teaching and research throughout his career. He has many peer-reviewed publications, authored multiple book chapters, and has presented research at national meetings. Dr. McDaniel is the proud recipient of the Saint Louis University Harry Brady Resident Research Award for his work on a novel surgical approach involving limbal filtration with simultaneous Baerveldt tube shunt implantation for patients with advanced glaucoma. He has a passion for patient education and believes patients do best when they understand their eye and its associated disease processes. Dr. McDaniel strives to give every patient the care and education they deserve.

A devoted husband and a father, Dr. McDaniel is happily married to his wife, Kylie. He and his family enjoy being outside, hiking, playing games, watching movies, swimming, golfing, cooking, and traveling.

Dr. McDaniel practices out of our our Atmore, Fairhope and Foley, Alabama offices.
